Ride Along Application

Whereas, I, the undersigned, have made a voluntary request for permission to ride as a guest observer in a Fire Department vehicle at the time when such vehicle is operated and staffed by members of the Lincoln Fire Department, and I have further requested permission to accompany a member or members of said Fire Department during the active performance of their duties as Firefighters; and


Whereas, I, the undersigned, acknowledge that the work and activities of the Fire Department are inherently dangerous, involving the risk of injury, damage, expense or loss to me or my property.


Now, therefore, I, the undersigned, agree that the City of Lincoln, its personnel, directors, agents, employees, and volunteers, and the driver or owner of any automobile owned or operated by or in the service of the City of Lincoln, their sureties, and each of them, shall not be held liable or responsible under any circumstances whatsoever by the applicant for any injury or loss incurred while riding as a guest observer in any vehicle of the City of Lincoln, or Lincoln Fire Department operations, or while accompanying a City employee or member of the Lincoln Fire Department operations during the active performance of official duties.


I, the undersigned, further agree to indemnify, hold harmless and defend the City of Lincoln, its personnel, directors, agents, employees, and volunteers against any and all claims, demands, costs, expenses (including attorney’s fees), actions, or liability whatsoever arising out of applicant's actions taken while participating in the City of Lincoln Fire Department “Ride-Along” program.


I, the undersigned, declare that the information in the foregoing application is correct, and I understand that I am assuming risk of injury or damage, and I waive, release and agree to indemnify the City of Lincoln; and that I knowingly and willingly assume the risk of any loss, damage, or injury of any kind whatsoever, which I may incur as a result of participating in the Fire Department “Ride-Along” program and knowingly and willingly indemnify the City of Lincoln.


I AM AWARE THAT THIS IS A RELEASE OF LIABILITY AND A LEGALLY BINDING CONTRACT BETWEEN THE CITY OF LINCOLN AND ME AND I SIGN IT OF MY OWN FREE WILL.

Requirements for Ride-Along

  1. APPLICANTS MUST BE AT LEAST 16 YEARS OF AGE, AT THE TIME THE APPLICATION IS SUBMITTED.
  2. APPLICANTS MUST BE RESIDENTS OF THE CITY OF LINCOLN OR:
    1. VISITING FIRE DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL.
    2. STUDENTS OF THE LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT IN POSSESSION OF A VALID STUDENT BODY CARD.
    3. STUDENT ENROLLED IN FIRE SCIENCE CLASSES AT A LOCAL COLLEGE.
    4. ANY NON-RESIDENT OF LINCOLN WHO POSSESSES A VALID CITY OF LINCOLN BUSINESS LICENSE.
    5. CITY OF LINCOLN EMPLOYEES AND THEIR IMMEDIATE FAMILY.
    6. ANY VALID NEWS MEDIA REPRESENTATIVE.
  3. APPLICANTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO RIDE MORE THAN ONCE A MONTH OR 12 TIMES A YEAR. THE ONLY EXCEPTION IS EMPLOYEE APPLICANTS OR WITH WRITTEN PERMISSION OF THE FIRE CHIEF OR HIS DESIGNEE.
  4. ALL APPLICANTS MUST SIGN A WAIVER AND RELEASE BEFORE THEY WILL BE ALLOWED TO RIDE ALONG. (See above)
  5. DRESS CODE: RIDE-ALONGS MUST BE NEATLY DRESSED IN LONG PANTS AND AN APPROPRIATE SHIRT. RIDE-ALONGS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE UNLESS NEATLY DRESSED. DENIM, TEE SHIRTS, HALTER TOPS, SHORTS, AND SANDALS ARE PROHIBITED.
  6. RIDE ALONGS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED IN A DANGEROUS OR “IDLH” (Immediately Dangerous to Life and Heath) ENVIRONMENT.
  7. CREW ACTIVITY, TRAINING, CALL VOLUME OR ANY UNFORSEEN EVENT MAY PRECLUDE A PERSON FROM RIDING ON ANY PARTICULAR SHIFT. THIS COULD OCCUR AT A LAST MINUTE. ALL ATTEMPTS WILL BE EMPLOYED TO ADVISE AN APPLICANT PRIOR TO THE BEGINNING OF THE RIDE ALONG.
  8. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT EACH RIDE ALONG BE AWARE THAT RIDING AT THE STATION IS A PRIVILEGE AND SHOULD BE REGARDED AS SUCH; SHE/HE IS THERE TO OBSERVE AND LEARN.
